Description
Expanding on the author's year-long study of the shrimp and salmon aquaculture industries as an Alicia Patterson Foundation Fellow, the book lays out the rationale behind aquaculture development: increasing the world food supply and creating jobs in areas hard hit by declining landings in wild fisheries. However, reality is something else entirely as evidenced in ravaged ecosystems and bankrupted local economies. The author expands on his existing...

Description
The challenge to the food system is due to rising populations, increased urbanization, and the exportation of high animal protein western diets. Food fish show promise for relieving some of the supply issues surrounding high input animal protein food sources for humans, yet there are lingering concerns about aquaculture's sustainability. Some advances in aquaculture methods including recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) have emerged, however, critical...

Description
The growing aquaculture industry is facing two important issues: the depletion of wild resources of fish protein used for feed inputs and the cost of production for fish hatcheries and farms. These issues can be addressed early in the process of production. Green tanking is a viable alternative to commercial feeds in early stages of fish production. In the study, tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (L.), fry from White Brook Tilapia Farm in Kansas City,...

Description
Aquaponics can be used to sustainably raise fresh fish and vegetables for a family, to feed a vaillage or to generate profit in a commercial farming venture. Aquaponics is the combination of aquaculture (fish farming) and hydroponics (soilless plan culture). In aquaponics, the nutrient-rich water from raising fish provides fertilizer for the plants and the plants help to purify the water the fish life in.

Description
Aquaponic gardening is a symbiotic gardening system that relies upon both flora and fauna to create a balanced ecosystem for harvesting both fish and plant material. It requires a larger amount of setup and investment than a standard hydroponic system, but contains benefits over it. It as well is less dependent upon outside additionn of nutrients or material to maintain its optimal operation level.

"Overfishing. For the world's oceans, it's long been a worrisome problem with few answers. Many of the global fish stocks are at a dangerous tipping point, some spiraling toward extinction. But as older fishing fleets retire and new technologies develop, a better, more sustainable way to farm this popular protein has emerged to profoundly shift the balance. The Blue Revolution tells the story of the recent transformation of commercial fishing: an...

"Algae are some of the fastest growing plants in the world and up to 50 per cent of their weight is oil.As well as its high oil content microalgae is also rich in other high value compounds such as vitamins, protein fatty acids, pigments, antioxidants and sterols. All these compounds can be extracted for use by the pharmaceutical industry and the algae itself can be used for feeding of livestock, particularly fish where there are hopes that it may...
